As part of the arrival orientation for incoming U.S. grantees, Fulbright Greece brought together all current U.S. scholars, students, and English Teaching Assistants with members of the Fulbright Greece team for a day of connection, culture, and relaxation at Kalamaki Beach Resort in the Corinth region.
Each year, Fulbright Greece organizes a multi-part orientation to welcome grantees to Greece and help them prepare for their experience. The program combines online information sessions and office visits with cultural activities and opportunities to meet fellow grantees and Fulbright alumni.
On Monday, 28 September, the group traveled by bus from Athens to Kalamaki, about an hour away. Along the way, they enjoyed a brief talk by U.S. Fulbright Scholar and Alumna, Dr. Amanda Katz on the landmarks along the route and on the historical ties between Greece and the United States. The warm, sunny weather was ideal for enjoying the resort's gardens, swimming pool, and beach.
The grantees were joined by Greek Fulbright alumni who had recently returned from their own Fulbright grants in the United States. They shared their experiences and offered practical advice on making the most of a year in Greece.
After brief introductions, the day opened with a traditional Greek dance lesson.
To the rhythm of traditional folk songs, a lively way to bring participants together, the group enthusiastically stepped, skipped, and danced their way into the day. After an energetic start, a refreshing swim in the sea or pool was more than welcome, followed by a delicious Mediterranean buffet lunch.
The afternoon was left free for participants to relax by the sea, continue conversations, and network informally. For the new grantees, it was an opportunity to begin building connections with one another, with Fulbright Greece staff, and with the wider Fulbright community.
As the day drew to a close, the group returned to Athens, bringing with them new friendships, shared experiences, and a warm welcome to their Fulbright year in Greece.
