Overview and Guidelines

The Fulbright Foundation in Greece will award up to eight grants to highly qualified academics and researchers for the purpose of teaching, conducting research, seeking career development, or engaging in institutional collaboration between Greek and U.S. academic institutions. In addition, up to two professional development grants will be awarded to assist professional artists, cultural practitioners, production and technical personnel in all artistic disciplines, to research into artistic concepts, techniques, and subjects U.S. universities, museums and other cultural organizations..

Emphases:

• Intellectual merit of the proposal;
• Research projects that recognize and promote the critical relationship between educational exchange and international understanding;
• Art projects that explore connections and build collaborations with colleagues, communities and institutions in the U.S. through professional development activities;
• Multiplier effect: projects that are conductive to candidates sharing their experiences and knowledge with colleagues and students in the host country (the U.S.) and, upon return, in the home country (Greece).

Key factors in candidate selection include professional qualifications, record of service to the field and to the home institution, academic excellence, career potential, civic engagement, and personal qualities/abilities to serve as a cultural ambassador for Greece.

All awards are subject to the Fulbright Foundation policies, in compliance with the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB) guidelines, and all U.S. government regulations regarding visas, immigration, travel, and residence.

Eligibility Requirements

Citizenship: Greek citizenship or possession of a Greek passport. Candidates with U.S./Greek dual citizenship are not eligible.

Education: Priority will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. degree obtained from a Greek institution of higher education. 

Home Institution Endorsement: Written leave approval of the home institution is required.

Residency: Permanent residency in Greece and commit to returning to fulfill the mission and aim of the Fulbright grant.

English Proficiency: Excellent command of the English language.

Research Period: The grant period may begin as early as September 1, 2027 and must be completed by May 31, 2028. The grant period cannot be divided and may be conducted at a maximum of two universities or research centers.

Duration: Minimum of three months. Recipients may continue their project under the auspices of Fulbright (visa sponsorship) for up to six months only if funding from sources other than the Fulbright Foundation is obtained. In that case, proof of funds is required; extensions are not allowed.

Affiliation: Official letter of invitation from the U.S. Host Institution.              

Research/Lecturing: Engage in full-time research and lecturing on the approved topic.

Preferences

Age: Preference given to candidates below the age of 55 at the time of application, and to those who are likely to remain active in their field for an extended period, ensuring that the knowledge and experience gained benefit their home institutions and broader academic communities.

Recent U.S. Experience: Preference given to qualified candidates without substantial recent experience in the United States.

Location: Candidates who have already started academic activity in the United States at the time of application are not eligible.

Financial Benefits:

Monthly Allowance: Monthly maintenance allowance of maximum US$4,200 for 3 months*. It is the candidate’s responsibility to establish whether Fulbright funding is compatible with funding already in place.
Travel Coverage: Round-trip travel allowance of maximum €2.000 depending on destination.
Health Plan Coverage: Limited accident and sickness benefits plan included.

Pre-Departure Orientation: Attend a comprehensive pre-departure orientation session.
Annual Awards Ceremony: Participate in the annual Awards Ceremony.
Certificate of Completion: Receive a Fulbright IIE Certificate of Completion.
Visa Assistance: Obtain a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa.

Candidates may need supplemental funding to meet the visa requirements for these cities. Applicants are strongly encouraged to explore educational opportunities in locations across the United States, many of which are much more affordable, while still offering excellent academic programs and vibrant cultural experiences. Terms and Conditions

Registration: is mandatory to establish eligibility before applying.

U.S. Host Institution: Contact and affiliation agreements with U.S. academic or research institutions are the sole responsibility of the applicant.

Deferral: Awards cannot be deferred to the following academic year.

J-1 visa: Fulbright grant recipients must travel on a J-1 visa sponsored by the Fulbright Program. It is a condition of the visa that, after completing the research program, scholars must return to Greece and reside there for two years before being eligible to immigrate or apply for permanent residence or a work permit in the United States. The purpose of the two-year home residency requirement is to ensure that exchange visitors return to their home country and fulfill the exchange objectives of the Fulbright Program to broaden and strengthen mutual understanding between Greece and the United States.

Dependents: travel on a J2 visa and accompany the grantee throughout the grant period.

Registration and Application Procedures

Step 1. Registration – Deadline: October 15, 2026 at 23:59 EET

Registration form: available online through the Fulbright website. The aim of the registration is to review your brief profile and establish eligibility. You will receive a confirmation email in the days following your submission, including the access link to the application. The sooner the candidate registers, the sooner s/he will be able to start the application process and secure required materials such as recommendations in due time.

Step 2. Online Application Procedure – Deadline: November 15, 2026 at 23:59 EET
Applications will not be considered without prior registration and acceptance to proceed. All applicants must complete the initial registration to determine eligibility before submitting a full application.

Selection

Pre-screening interview: the Foundation may invite individual applicants for a pre-screening interview. 

U.S.-based Fulbright Peer Review Committee: reviews, evaluates, and scores the project proposals.

Fulbright Greece Board of Directors nominates the candidates. Nominees are subject to final review and approval by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB).

Change of plans: You should promptly inform the Greek Program Coordinator of any change in your academic status or future plans after the application has been submitted.
