Overview and Guidelines

The Fulbright Foundation in Greece will award up to five grants for the academic year beginning August/September 2027 to outstanding students seeking to pursue a master’s degree—including MA/Ph.D. track programs—at accredited U.S. colleges and universities. 

Eligibility and Focus Areas

• All academic disciplines are eligible, except for programs in Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Science, and Ph.D.-only degrees.
• Equal consideration is given to applicants across the Humanities & Social Sciences, STEM, and Business fields.
• Applicants are encouraged to explore a broad range of U.S. institutions nationwide, as many offer innovative and diverse programs that may align with individual goals.

Special Opportunities in 2027–2028

• The Fulbright–Georgetown University Partner Award offers enhanced access to environmental oriented graduate study at Georgetown. 
• The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education offers financial support to Fulbright grantees—an excellent option for those pursuing a career in education.

Many U.S. universities support Fulbright students through cost-sharing agreements or tuition waivers. We encourage candidates to check regularly for new or updated institutional partnerships.

Selection Criteria
Fulbright Greece scholarships are granted through a competitive, merit-based process. Evaluation is based on academic excellence, potential for professional growth, civic engagement, extracurricular involvement, and the ability to serve as a representative of Greece abroad. All applicants must meet clearly defined eligibility criteria and program requirements outlined in each grant category.

All awards are subject to Fulbright Foundation Greece policies, in accordance with Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB) guidelines and U.S. government regulations.

Eligibility Requirements

Citizenship: Greek citizenship or possession of a Greek passport. Candidates with U.S./Greek dual citizenship are not eligible.

Education: Enrolled as a final-year student in a B.A. study program at, or hold a B.A. degree from a recognized institution in Greece.

Academic Achievement: Minimum GPA of 8.0 (out of 10.00) or 3.4 (out of 4.0) for B.A. degree.

High Academic Achievement: Demonstrated by grades, awards, and recommendations.

Residency: Have permanent residency in Greece and commit to returning to fulfill the mission and aim of the Fulbright grant.

English Proficiency: Excellent command of the English language.

U.S. Institutions: apply to more than one U.S. institution to increase the chance of acceptance (ideally 4-8 institutions).

Full-time Study: Engage in full-time on-campus study.

Preferences

Age: Preference given to candidates below the age of 28  at the time of application and to those with a student profile.

Recent U.S. Experience: Preference given to qualified candidates without substantial recent experience in the United States.

Location: Candidates in the United States at the time of application are not eligible.

Terms and Conditions

Registration: before applying is mandatory so as to establish eligibility

U.S. Institutions: Candidates should already have applied to U.S. universities or be in the process of applying when they submit their Fulbright application. Admission to a U.S. university is not required at the time of application but is mandatory for the award of the grant.

Deferral: Awards cannot be deferred to the following academic year.

J-1 visa: Fulbright grant recipients must travel on a J-1 visa sponsored by the Fulbright Program. It is a condition of the visa that, after completing the academic program, scholars must return to Greece and reside there for two years before being eligible to immigrate or apply for permanent residence or a work permit in the United States. The purpose of the two-year home residency requirement is to ensure that exchange visitors return to their home country and fulfill the exchange objectives of the Fulbright Program to broaden and strengthen mutual understanding between Greece and the United States.

Military: Male applicants are responsible for settling all relevant Greek military obligations.

Registration and Application Procedures

Step 1. Registration – Deadline: October 15, 2026 at 23:59 EET

Registration form: available online through the Fulbright website. The aim of the registration is to review your brief profile and establish eligibility. You will receive a confirmation email in the days following your submission, including the access link to the application. The sooner the candidate registers, the sooner s/he will be able to start the application process and secure required materials such as recommendations in due time.

Step 2. Online Application Procedure – Deadline: November 15, 2026 at 23:59 EET
Applications will not be considered without prior registration and acceptance to proceed. All applicants must complete the initial registration to determine eligibility before submitting a full application.

Selection

Pre-screening interview: the Foundation may invite individual applicants for a pre-screening interview. 

Selection Committee: interviews short-listed candidates on specific dates. Interviews last for about 15 minutes, are conducted in English, and are held online.

Fulbright Foundation's Board of Directors: endorses the candidates. Nominees are subject to final review and approval by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB).
