Information for prospective candidates, including eligibility and application details, can be found at https://fulbrightscholars.org/fulbrightnationalarchives.

The Fulbright-National Archives Heritage Science Fellowship, a component of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program, provides an opportunity for a Fulbright visiting scholar to connect with National Archives and Record Administration-NARA scientists and experts while conducting research at the National Archives and Record Administration’s Heritage Science Research and Testing Lab in College Park, Maryland. Eligibility includes pre-doctoral Ph.D. researchers in addition to those with another terminal degree, as well as professionals with a Master’s degree who have applied experience relevant to the field of archival heritage science.

This fellowship is made possible through a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and the National Archives and Records Administration. The award was established to support archival science education, conservation, and research. Heritage science is an interdisciplinary field spanning the humanities and sciences. It focuses on enhancing the care, use, and management of cultural and historic objects using the tools and technology of math, science, and engineering disciplines. NARA is an independent federal agency that serves American democracy by safeguarding and preserving the records of the U.S. government so people can discover, use, and learn from this documentary heritage.  NARA carries out the mission through a nationwide network of archives, records centers, Presidential Libraries and online sources.

Applications are due by October 15, 2022 for the 2023-24 academic year.  The award will be fully funded by ECA in support of one fellow worldwide.

In 2021, the program had a successful inaugural competition for this new award which included some exciting proposals.  Some examples were methods for removal of adhesive tape residues, green methods for paper deacidification, and adhesive alternatives.  Ultimately, Dr. Cancy Chu, an Australian scientist, was selected for a project on “Interventive Materials and Techniques for the Repair of Synthetic Papers”.
