2023-2024 ENGLISH TEACHING ASSISTANT PROGRAM - ATHENS COLLEGE

Mass Communication, Georgia College and State University, Milledgeville, GA

Serving as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Greece has allowed me to explore how education can reach across cultural boundaries to bring people together. Before coming to Greece, I studied Mass Communication at Georgia College and State University and graduated in May 2022.

My studies led me to pursue journalism, where I wrote for Georgia’s top newspaper, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and worked freelance as an editorial researcher for CNN. From theater, the elements of persuasion, and the birth of democracy, Greece has offered me a unique opportunity to grow as a communicator. I believe that education stands at the core of journalism. I’ve found that translating information to the general public worked similarly to breaking down large concepts regarding grammar, or figurative language into smaller, manageable pieces for my students.

For the first semester, I have been placed in the University Application Counseling Office, where I work with students one-on-one to help them develop the necessary writing skills to create strong essays and gain admission to schools across Europe, Canada, and the United States. I’ve helped students unlock their innermost passions and values as they come upon making one of the biggest decisions in their lives. In turn, I’ve learned more about Greece through their perspectives, and working with them has been a transformative experience.

This semester, I’ve been placed in Psychico High School where I’ve had the opportunity to connect with even more students, teachers, and faculty. I’ve been able to use my past experience in the classroom by teaching students Media Literacy. In the classroom, we’ve investigated the real impacts of misinformation, how they’ve been affected by it, and how organizations target bias to relay information. With my students, we’ve been able to analyze texts like To Kill a Mockingbird and Animal Farm and have deeper discussions about what they say about history and how they’ve contributed to today’s society. I've been so grateful to work with such supportive colleagues at Athens College who inspire me daily and shape not only who I am as a teacher, but as a person.
