Robotics, University of Denver, Colorado
As a Fulbright scholar, I had the opportunity to conduct research in aerial robotics at the University of Denver (DU) in Colorado, focusing on the challenge of enabling drones to perform manipulation tasks while flying. My work in the U.S. involved designing and building a quadrotor equipped with a two-degree-of-freedom robotic arm and developing a model-based controller that accounts for the complex dynamic interactions between the drone and the manipulator. Meaningful connections at DU and persistent self-effort drove me to bridge the gap from theory to real-world experiments, culminating in successful outdoor flight tests where the drone flew complex trajectories while the arm performed precise motions underneath. This research resulted in a journal publication in MDPI Drones (Q1 ranking), selected as the cover story of the April 2026 issue.
Beyond the laboratory, the Fulbright experience enriched my life in ways I did not anticipate. Living in the United States exposed me to a diverse academic environment where I learned to collaborate with researchers from different backgrounds and disciplines, improving both my technical understanding and my ability to approach problems from new perspectives. My colleagues soon became close friends who were eager to learn about Greece, and without their support my experiments and the progress toward finalizing my PhD would not have been possible. I also wanted to experience American culture not only through everyday interactions but by exploring new places and traditions — during my time in the U.S., I visited ten states, curious enough to discover how different people across the country live and eager to connect with new people wherever I went. The Fulbright program reminded me that research does not happen in isolation; it thrives when people from different countries and cultures come together to share knowledge, ideas, and curiosity. I return home not only as a more capable researcher but also as a more open-minded individual, carrying with me friendships and experiences that will shape my career and personal life for years to come.
