Overview and Guidelines

The Fulbright Foundation in Greece will award up to five grants to Ph.D. candidates enrolled at Greek institutions of higher education to conduct full-time research at universities or research centers in the United States. 

Emphases:

• Choice of topic;
• Detailed proposal;
• Advanced stage of research.

Key factors in candidate selection include a strong academic standing at the home institution, a demonstrated need for research in the U.S., academic excellence, career potential, civic engagement, and personal qualities and abilities to serve as a cultural ambassador for Greece.

All awards are subject to the Fulbright Foundation policies, in compliance with the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB) guidelines, and all U.S. government regulations regarding visas, immigration, travel, and residence.

Eligibility Requirements

Citizenship: Greek citizenship or possession of a Greek passport. Candidates with U.S./Greek dual citizenship are not eligible.

Education: Hold a B.A./M.A. degree from recognized institutions in Greece.

Academic Achievement: Minimum GPA of 7.0 (out of 10.00) for B.A. degree.

High Academic Achievement: Demonstrated by grades, awards, recommendations, and publications.

Ph.D. Enrollment: Officially enrolled as a Ph.D. candidate at a Greek institution of higher education.

Research Experience: Completed a minimum of one year and a maximum of four years of research at the time of application.

Supervisor Endorsement: Ph.D. supervisor must endorse your research in the U.S.

Residency: Have permanent residency in Greece and commit to returning to fulfill the mission and aim of the Fulbright grant.

Dissertation Finalization: Finalize dissertation in Greece and submit it to the home institution.

English Proficiency: Excellent command of the English language.

Research Period The grant period may begin as early as September 1, 2026 and must be completed by May 31, 2027. The grant period cannot be divided and may be conducted at a maximum of two universities or research centers.

Duration: Research periods are 4 to 6 months based on need; extensions are not allowed.

Affiliation: Official letter of invitation from a U.S. university/research center.

Full-time Research: Engage in full-time research on the approved topic.

Preferences

Age: Preference given to candidates below the age of 35 at the time of application.

Recent U.S. Experience: Preference given to qualified candidates without substantial recent experience in the United States.

Location: Candidates in the United States at the time of application are not eligible.

Candidates may need supplemental funding to meet the visa requirements for these cities. Terms and Conditions

Registration: before applying is mandatory so as to establish eligibility

U.S. Host Institution: Contact and affiliation agreements with U.S. academic or research institutions are the sole responsibility of the applicant.

Deferral: Awards cannot be deferred to the following academic year.

J-1 visa: Fulbright grant recipients must travel on a J-1 visa sponsored by the Fulbright Program. It is a condition of the visa that, after completing the research program, scholars must return to Greece and reside there for two years before being eligible to immigrate or apply for permanent residence or a work permit in the United States. The purpose of the two-year home residency requirement is to ensure that exchange visitors return to their home country and fulfill the exchange objectives of the Fulbright Program to broaden and strengthen mutual understanding between Greece and the United States.

Dependents: travel on a J2 visa and accompany the grantee throughout the grant period.

Registration and Application Procedures

Step 1. Registration – Deadline: November 15, 2025 at 23:59 EET

Registration form: available online through the Fulbright website. Once submitted, the Fulbright Foundation/Greek Program Coordinator will review for eligibility. You will receive a confirmation email in the days following your submission including the access link to the application. The sooner the candidate registers, the sooner s/he will be able to start the application process.

Step 2. Online Application Procedure – Deadline: December 15, 2025 at 23:59 EET
Applications will not be considered without prior registration and acceptance to proceed. All applicants must complete the initial registration to determine eligibility before submitting a full application.

Selection

Selection Committee: interviews short-listed candidates on specific dates. Interviews last for about 20 minutes, are conducted in English, and are held online.
 
Fulbright Foundation's Board of Directors: endorses the candidates. Nominees are subject to final approval by the Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB).

Change of plans: You should promptly inform the Greek Program Coordinator of any change in your academic status or future plans after the application has been submitted.
