Biomedical Engineering, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York State
My journey at Cornell University over the 2025-2026 academic year was quite the Odyssey. However, Cavafy would surely be happy to learn that it was a long one, full of adventure, discovery, learning, and a myriad of other priceless experiences. I am extremely fortunate to have had truly inspiring professors that changed not only my career goals and aspirations but also my entire outlook on life, friends that I already know I will keep for the rest of my life, and so many chances to do more than I originally believed I could.
This was a once-in-a-lifetime journey that I am extremely grateful for and shaped by. I truly challenged myself; I have grown tremendously since I first arrived in the United States, and I returned to Greece a different man.
Every week’s goal was to survive the week, and without even noticing, graduation was around the corner. I still haven’t processed it fully. However, I remember all the sleepless nights, busy days, site visits, group meetings, and midnight discussions as if it were yesterday, and as I recall them, I feel happy, proud and thankful.
During this journey, I also had the unique opportunity to meet many Fulbrighters, some of whom I had the pleasure of showing around Cornell’s campus. Interactions like these, along with others with fellow Cornellians, broadened my horizons greatly by giving me a firsthand look at different cultures.
By now, I have understood what Ithacas mean. Even though this journey has concluded, I am certain there are many more Ithacas waiting for me in the future, and I intend to experience them fully. What I hope is that I can help people set off for their own Ithaca.
