In this last month of my Fulbright, I have been happy to see that the past few months of gathering and reading sources, being exposed to the trajectory of Modern Greek literature through a university class, and being in Greece with the time to think, has clarified and hugely informed my approach to writing about Kadmo for my doctoral dissertation. Without having been exposed to these sources, I would certainly not have as grounded an approach as I do now. This has both motivated me and inspired me to continue (no small thing in a long dissertation project!)… All in all, while it is hard to believe that my grant has ended, I am happy to have gotten everything I need, and the chance to advance my project. I wouldn’t have been able to do that without this chance to study abroad on my IKY-Fulbright research grant. I am immensely grateful and feel inspired moving forward…

This experience was both professionally and personally enriching. Teaching and conducting research in another educational system inspired me to bring those insights back to my home institution. I was grateful to share the journey with my wonderful wife and two bright children, who experienced Greece beyond tourism—interacting with locals in Greek and visiting sites like the Greek Parliament, the Parthenon, and celebrating Easter in Corfu.

Advice for Future Fulbrighters: If I could offer one piece of advice to future Fulbright scholars: embrace every opportunity to say “yes.” Yes to a research collaboration. Yes to a dinner invitation. Yes to an unplanned field trip. These are the moments that transform a grant into a life-changing experience. Being a Fulbrighter in Greece has allowed me to grow as a scientist, educator, and global citizen. The impact of this journey will stay with me far beyond my time here, and I encourage anyone considering the program to take the leap—you won’t regret it.

The Fulbright Greece program created a very strong platform for researchers through making introductions to key experts, providing access to Greek language courses, hosting numerous cultural and historical events, and more. Fulbright Greece also developed a collegial environment amongst grantees through orientation and events held throughout the course of the program. Going forward, I hope to support collaborations between Greek universities and my home institution. I’m happy to have formed many great friendships during this program and look forward to staying in touch with fellow Fulbright Scholars, the Fulbright program, and my professors and mentors.

I have thoroughly enjoyed bridging the gap created between an ocean and learning that another culture is just as beautiful as my own. I am eager to take back all this year has taught me to my future classroom, and I will be dreaming of the day I get to return to a place I was fortunate enough to call home.
