My Fulbright Visiting Scholar experience at the University of Memphis was a highly rewarding and enriching period, both scientifically and personally. During my stay, I had the opportunity to work with Professor Firouzeh Sabri and members of her research group, on advanced materials with emphasis on biopolymer aerogels, with particular attention to their surface properties including roughness, and their potential for sustainable synthesis and applications in biomedicine.
Our interactions provided an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge and also allowed me to introduce perspectives from my research group at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and to establish stronger scientific links between the two institutions.
As part of my visit, I had the opportunity to present my research at the University of Memphis and also to deliver an invited seminar at NASA Glenn Research Center. These presentations were particularly valuable opportunities to share our work on sustainable and advanced aerogel materials, exchange ideas with a wider audience from different scientific backgrounds, and broaden my professional network.
Following my stay, Professor Sabri has joined the newly established COST Action CA25170 SUSTAiROGELs (https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA25170/), European Network for Sustainable Aerogels in Advanced Circular and AI-Enabled Applications, which I coordinate as the Action Chair. This COST Action provides us with a formal framework for continuing our scientific exchange and developing broader international collaborations. In the shorter term, at least two joint scientific publications are expected to result from the work carried out during my Fulbright stay.
Beyond the scientific activities, my time in Memphis was a valuable cultural and personal experience. It gave me the opportunity to build new professional and personal connections, engage with researchers from different backgrounds, and experience the culture and character of Memphis and the American South from a new perspective.
I am very grateful to the Fulbright Program, the University of Memphis, Professor Sabri, and all the colleagues who contributed to making this experience so productive and memorable. I look forward to continuing the collaborations established during my Fulbright stay and building on the scientific connections and opportunities that it created.
