Fulbright Highlights 2024

Celebrating a Year of Transformative Educational Exchanges

As we reflect on the 2024–2025 Fulbright Scholarship cycle, we celebrate another significant milestone in the long-standing U.S.-Greece educational exchanges. Seventy-three exceptional Greek and U.S. students, scholars, researchers, teachers, and artists have been awarded Fulbright scholarships. Chosen from a highly competitive pool through a rigorous review process, these recipients embody the excellence and transformative impact of the Fulbright Program.

We are filled with gratitude for the remarkable community that makes our mission possible. Our sincere appreciation goes to the Board of Directors, whose guidance and commitment shape the program’s vision; to the alumni, who embody the transformative spirit of Fulbright and inspire future generations; and to the collaborators and partners who offer invaluable support and expertise in advancing our initiatives.

A special acknowledgment to the Honorary Chair of the Board, U.S. Ambassador George J. Tsunis, as he concludes his term in Greece. His steadfast leadership and unwavering support of the Fulbright mission have been instrumental in strengthening educational and cultural ties between our two countries. We are thankful for his contributions and wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.

U.S.-Greece educational collaboration has reached new heights. The latest Open Doors 2024 data reveals a remarkable 34% increase in U.S. students studying in Greece during the 2022–23 academic year, rising from 4,484 to over 6,000. This growth cements Greece’s position as a top-ten study abroad destination, steadily climbing in popularity since its 17th-place ranking in 2018. At the same time, the number of Greek students pursuing studies in the United States has grown to 2,561 during the 2023–24 academic year, further underscoring the vitality of our academic exchange.

Since 1948, Fulbright Greece has played a pivotal role in fostering educational ties between our two nations, providing unique opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to deepen their knowledge and promote mutual understanding.

Fulbright grants enable transformative research and collaboration across today’s most pressing fields, including artificial intelligence, climate change, renewable energy, public health innovation, and global security. In addition, groundbreaking work in neuroscience, biotechnology, and digital media addresses critical global challenges. The program also champions the arts and humanities, enriching cultural understanding through literature, philosophy, history, and the visual and performing arts.

Fulbright recipients drive change, explore innovative solutions, and promote cross-cultural dialogue. By empowering individuals to contribute meaningfully across diverse disciplines, the Fulbright Program continues to shape a more interconnected and understanding world.

This year marked a new chapter in the Fulbright-State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) collaboration. The partnership has significantly increased opportunities for doctoral candidates from both countries, enabling short-term research in Greece for U.S. scholars and advanced research opportunities in the U.S. for Greek scholars. We are delighted to have sent off the first two cohorts of Greek scholars and welcome the inaugural cohort of U.S. scholars, further strengthening the academic ties between our nations.

The continued success of our program is made possible through core funding from the governments of the United States and the Hellenic Republic, whose steadfast support ensures its sustainability and growth. We are  grateful to our 2024–2025 donors, whose generosity expands scholarship opportunities and furthers our mission of fostering mutual understanding through education and cultural exchange.

We invite you to join this circle of supporters and help us create more transformative opportunities for scholars, researchers, and artists. Your contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference.
