Human biology and the genetic basis of complex diseases

Georgios Dedoussis (Fulbright Scholar, 2004-2005) is Rector and Professor of Molecular Genetics and Nutrigenetics at Harokopio University of Athens. His research focuses on the genetic basis of complex diseases, including obesity, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes, as well as the role of nutrigenetics in personalized nutrition.

He has co-authored landmark studies published in Nature, Nature Genetics, and other leading journals, and has contributed to international consortia that have advanced understanding of metabolic health and genetic risk factors. He has led or participated in more than 10 international and EU-funded research projects. With more than 84,000 citations and an h-index of 111, his work has made a significant contribution to human genetics and public health, establishing him as one of Greece's most internationally recognized scientists.

As a Fulbright Scholar, Professor Dedoussis conducted research at Harvard Medical School, where he expanded his methodological expertise and developed connections with collaborative research networks that would influence his subsequent career. The experience reinforced his commitment to interdisciplinary science and opened the way to long-term partnerships with research teams around the world.

Since then, he has played a leading role in major genetic studies while mentoring a new generation of Greek scientists and encouraging them to pursue international opportunities and embrace the challenges of interdisciplinary research. He advises younger scholars to remain resilient, cultivate curiosity, and seek collaborations that connect scientific rigor with societal relevance—principles that continue to guide his own contributions to genetics and nutrigenetics.
