Nanotechnology. Biomedical Applications
Maria Gazouli (Fulbright Scholar, 2012–2013) is Professor of Biology, Genetics, and Nanomedicine at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She specializes in molecular biology, human genetics, the microbiome, cancer biology, and nanotechnology-based diagnostics and therapeutics.
Her Fulbright award supported advanced training in nanotechnology and nanomedicine at the University of Maryland NanoCenter, where she focused on emerging nanoscale platforms for targeted drug delivery and biomedical applications. The experience played a significant role in shaping her subsequent scientific trajectory, strengthening her commitment to interdisciplinary research and accelerating her engagement with nanotechnology and its medical applications. Exposure to leading U.S. research environments enhanced her ability to integrate nanomedicine into both her laboratory work and graduate education programs, contributing to the development of this emerging field in Greece.
Following her Fulbright experience, Gazouli expanded her research portfolio in precision medicine, supervised numerous Ph.D. and M.Sc. theses in advanced biomedical fields, and deepened her participation in national and international research collaborations. Her work now spans biomarker discovery, molecular mechanisms of disease, regenerative medicine, and innovative nanoparticle-based therapeutic strategies. She also leads the development of nanomedicine curricula and e-learning programs in Greece.
Among her major contributions are her extensive work in postgraduate education, service on academic and scientific evaluation committees, and authorship and editorial supervision of influential biology and biomedical textbooks.
Gazouli encourages younger scholars to build strong foundations in their chosen fields while remaining open to interdisciplinary approaches and new areas of research. She emphasizes the value of international training opportunities such as the Fulbright Program and of cultivating collaborations that broaden perspectives, foster knowledge exchange, and drive scientific innovation.
