PROFESSOR OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

UNITED STATES TO GREECE
Transportation. Roadway Design. Geometric design, context sensitive solutions, and practical design

Nikiforos Stamatiadis (Fulbright Scholar, 2021–2022) completed his Fulbright Fellowship in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Thessaly in the city of Volos. The award provided him with the opportunity to teach a course on roadway design and its environmental and societal impacts while engaging with students and colleagues in teaching and research.

He was particularly impressed by the curiosity of his students and the questions they raised during their exchanges. At the same time, he collaborated with colleagues on research examining the needs of non-motorized road users—including pedestrians, bicyclists, and scooter users—in the local context of Volos.

His hosts, Drs. Pantelis Kopelias and Akis Theofilatos, played an important role in making his stay both professionally and personally rewarding. Their regular meetings over lunch at Volos' traditional tsipouradika –a restaurant where tsipouro is accompanied by small plates of food at the discretion of the owner– provided opportunities for conversations that extended beyond education and research to include local and national issues. The experience, he recalls, made him feel at home despite not having grown up in the region.

Together with a previous Fulbright award at the University of Catania in Italy, the fellowship in Greece helped Stamatiadis refocus his teaching, research, and public outreach on roadway designs that better accommodate non-motorized users. Building on his previous work, he developed a roadway design course aimed at helping engineers create solutions that respond to the complexities of multimodal transportation.

The impact of his Fulbright experiences has extended beyond his own teaching and research. The support provided by the Fulbright Program contributed to his establishing Student and Faculty Exchange Agreements between the Colleges of Engineering at the University of Kentucky and the University of Catania in 2018, and between the University of Kentucky and the University of Thessaly in 2024. In 2022, he received the UK Global Impact Award for Distinguished Faculty Achievements in International Research and Scholarship. In recognition of his longstanding involvement with Greek universities, he was also elected in 2023 to the Administrative Council of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, his alma mater, for a four-year term.

Stamatiadis has long sought to strengthen academic education and research in Greece and to give back to the Greek university system from which he benefited as a student. He considers his Fulbright Fellowship an important opportunity to share his knowledge, skills, and expertise with the Greek academic community while contributing to meaningful educational and research connections between Greece and the United States.

For Stamatiadis, Fulbright demonstrates the lasting impact that academic exchange can have—not only on individual scholars, but also on the institutions and communities they serve. He strongly encourages scholars to consider the many Fulbright opportunities available and to use their experiences to make a difference in education and research in both their home and host countries.
