Sokratis Alafouzos

DIRECTOR, PRODUCER, WRITER, EDUCATOR

GREECE TO THE UNITED STATES
Theater, Film directing, and media arts

In recent years, Sokratis Alafouzos (Fulbright Artist, 1991–1992) has focused professionally on education, as well as directing for film and theater. In January 2022, he was appointed Presidential Fellow in Greek Theater at Chapman University in Orange, California, where he began teaching in the Honors and Theater Department. Over the past three years, he has taught graduate courses in film directing at the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts.

In 2019, he founded Theatron of the Americas, a nonprofit theater organization, where he serves as Artistic Director. He is currently in the early stages of preparing a production of Aristophanes' Lysistrata, which is planned for presentation during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. His acting career spans more than 35 years, primarily in Greece and the United States, with leading roles in theater, film, and television. He has received international recognition for his work as a director, actor, and screenwriter.

Alafouzos was awarded a Fulbright grant for training at the Beverly Hills Playhouse in Los Angeles, where he studied with outstanding teachers and actors and had the privilege of participating in the Milton Katselas Masterclass. He credits the experience with profoundly influencing his professional development and helping him achieve goals and dreams that had once seemed unattainable. More importantly, he considers it the beginning of a personal journey of change and empowerment that ultimately transformed his life.

One experience in particular remains especially significant. During a rehearsal for the famous balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, Alafouzos was whispering as usual so that Juliet would not hear him while gazing up at her on the balcony. His teacher, the acclaimed Joe Santos, leaned in and told him not to whisper: “You are not afraid of anything. Go out there and shout. You are not afraid of being heard. You have too much power inside of you. Let it out.”

For Alafouzos, those words went beyond the character of Romeo. He came to understand that his teacher was also speaking to him and to his own personal journey. He followed Santos' instructions, and the scene went perfectly. He remembers that night as a significant experience and personal victory. Although it took him several years to fully embrace the lesson, he eventually reached a point where he felt able to unleash the power within him. It was then that he began directing.

Alafouzos believes that without the Fulbright Program and the transformative experiences it made possible, his life would have taken a very different path. He encourages young scholars to embrace the unknown and explore new paths rather than allowing their choices to be driven solely by security or familiarity. By stepping beyond their comfort zones, he believes, they can discover talents and strengths that might otherwise remain hidden.

For Alafouzos, the Fulbright experience can be the beginning of a journey filled with opportunities to discover one's inner strength, live a meaningful life, and contribute to a better world.
