Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program

Fulbright Greece is proud to announce that it has added a new scholarship program to its core program: the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program for U.S. and Greek primary and secondary school teachers. Teachers are selected to participate in a 3- to 5-month exchange opportunity, which gives them ample time to immerse themselves into a different pedagogic environment. Main goals are the observation of educational best practices internationally and the promotion of mutual understanding between teachers, their schools and communities by building teachers’ and students’ global competence.

In January 2018, the Foundation welcomed the first two incoming U.S. teachers, Vincent Gray and Joseph Talarico, for a 5-month stay in Greece. During their stay, the teachers observed classes in primary and secondary public and private schools and completed a project pertaining to their field of educational inquiry.

Vincent Gray is a Social Studies teacher at De Kalb County Schools, Atlanta, GA, and his focus was primarily placed on the development of courses and curriculum models that use debate and dialogue as techniques in  secondary school classrooms, especially ones embracing an emerging multi-cultural approach.

Joseph Talarico is an English Language teacher at Columbia Heights Education Campus, Washington D.C. and his inquiry dealt with the implementation of cross-thematic curricula with the goal of building more student independence, inquiry, critical thinking skills, socio-emotional learning, cultural awareness, and, ultimately, educational progress.

In January 2019, we are expecting U.S. teachers, Athanasia Kyriakakos and Sarah Cornette, both with a background in arts education while two Greek teachers will depart for the U.S. around the same time.
