Catherine is a Ph.D. Candidate in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Arizona. Her research is in ancient ceramic technologies, specifically focusing on lead-glazing technology from the Medieval Period. Her Fulbright project, titled “Technological Connection between Byzantine and Early Islamic Glazed Ceramic Production” is an extension of her dissertation research on early lead-glazes from Central Asia. Catherine will be reconstructing the Byzantine lead-glazing technologies in order to determine the historic technological connection between Byzantine and Islamic ceramics. This research will light on the knowledge networks developed and shared between the Byzantine Empire and populations to the East. While in Greece Catherine will be based in Athens.
