Matei Georgescu is Associate Professor in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University. His research is focused on human-environment interactions at local to global scales. Specifically, his interests aim to improve understanding and characterization of distinct phenomena related to urbanization-induced landscape change, as well as potential adaptation and mitigation strategies. His work also addresses environmental consequences of renewable energy expansion by integrating across physical, agricultural, and socioeconomic elements. The range of tools used to investigate these topics include climate models, remote sensing data and associated applications, and in situ weather/climate observations. He has has published more than 50 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, including in prestigious outlets like the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America and Nature Climate Change. He serves as Associate Editor of Journal of Geophysical Research – Atmospheres and on the Editorial Board of Environmental Research Letters. At the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH), in Crete, he will work with his hosts on the numerical simulation of current and projected mid- and end of century heat wave events for Greece via an advance technique referred to as dynamical downscaling. He will combine his skills as a physics-based modeler with his desire to communicate methods and findings to students and faculty at FORTH and across Greece.
