Russell Frank worked as a reporter and editor for newspapers in California and Pennsylvania for 13 years before joining the journalism faculty of the Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State University in 1998. He has written extensively about news media ethics, Internet folklore and journalistic storytelling while continuing to work as a journalist with freelance publications in the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and other newspapers, as well as a regular local newspaper column. During his career at Penn State, Frank has taught undergraduate courses in news writing, feature writing, column writing, literary journalism and news media ethics, and graduate courses in literary journalism, Internet cultures and the scholarship of journalism. He is the author of two books: “Newslore: Contemporary Folklore on the Internet” and a collection of his newspaper columns titled “Among the Woo People: A Survival Guide for Living in a College Town.” He received a Fulbright teaching award to teach journalism at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine in Fall 2012.

During his term in Greece as a Fulbright fellow in 2019-2020, Frank will teach in the Master of Arts in Digital Media, Communication and Journalism program at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki. His goal is to prepare students to report on the migrant crisis in Greece through training in journalism ethics, crisis journalism and depth reporting. He also intends to do research and reporting of his own on the migrant crisis and on the contemporary situation of Thessaloniki’s Jewish community.
