Biochemistry / RNA Biology

Dr. Constantinos Stathopoulos is Professor of Biochemistry at the Department of Biochemistry, School of Medicine, University of Patras. He received his PhD from the same University in 1996, working on ribozymes and tRNA metabolism. From 1998 until 2001 he was a postdoctoral research associate at Yale University working on the evolution and functional genomics of the genetic code and the translational apparatus and upon his return he was appointed as Assistant Professor at the University of Thessaly (2002-2009). In 2009, he moved back to the University of Patras and since then, his group is focused on various aspects of RNA biology with focus on the essential role of small and long non-coding RNAs and their related proteins in the regulation of transcription and translation in diseases, using high-throughput and genome editing screening to decipher RNA-mediated mechanisms. He has co-authored 65 papers, including publications in top-tier journals like Science, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci., TiBS, Nucleic Acids Res., etc. He is member of the editorial board of IJMS, of the scientific advisory board of the bioinformatics company InSybio and has served as reviewer for more than 40 international peer-reviewed journals, national and international grant agencies and boards.

Fulbright Foundation will provide the opportunity to expand his established collaboration with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda and join efforts towards the elucidation of the modulation of mainstream antibiotics on the tRNA-dependent regulation of transcription in prominent human pathogens. In collaboration with the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at NIDDK (Section of Structural Biology of Noncoding RNAs and Ribonucleoproteins) he will study the structure-function relationship of T-box riboswitches from staphylococci and he will promote the establishment of academic bridges for young PhD and medical students between both Institutions.
