Dr. Angeliki Magklara is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Chemistry in the Department of Medicine at the University of Ioannina and a Research Associate at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas). She holds a B.Sc. in Biology and a M.Sc. in Clinical Chemistry from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto, Canada (Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, Faculty of Medicine). Dr. Magklara did her post-doctoral training at the National Cancer Institute (N.I.H., Maryland U.S.A) and at the University of San Francisco in California (UCSF). In 2012 she was awarded a Marie Curie Re-integration Grant and returned to Greece and at the beginning of 2014 she joined the faculty of the University of Ioannina.

During the last 4 years, Dr. Magklara has been studying the biology of cancer stem cells. The Fulbright grant will make it possible for her to visit Dr. Weinberg' laboratory of Cancer Biology at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research (M.I.T, Boston), which is doing pioneering work in the field. She will have the opportunity to investigate novel epigenetic mechanisms that regulate cancer stem cells and her work will, hopefully, offer new insights into this aggressive tumor subpopulation.

Upon her return, Dr. Magklara aims to establish a channel of communication and interaction between M.I.T and Greek research groups, as well as, to motivate young researchers, especially females, to actively pursue opportunities to grow and excel as scientists in Greece and abroad.
