Ilias Skeparnias is a graduate of the Biology Department of the University of Patras. He continued his studies as an MSC student of the Graduate Program on Biomedical Sciences at the School of Medicine of the University of Patras. During his master research he was responsible for the rational design and evaluation of modulators of DEDD deadenylases and mRNA turnover. After his graduation with distinction he continued as a PhD candidate having awarded a scholarship by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI). His PhD work focuses on mammalian PNLDC1, a novel deadenylase which recently characterized from their research group and has discrete role on early development. Ilias is an expert on the field of RNA metabolism and RNA-protein interactions which regulate gene expression and part of his research has been already presented in scientific conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. At this stage of his career the Fulbright scholarship will allow him to complete his PhD work at NIH, working on the crystal structure of human and mouse PNLDC1. The research will be performed in collaboration with members of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at NIDDK, NIH which are considered world leaders in RNA structural biology and guarantee full support and success regarding transcriptomics, proteomics and structural studies. It is more than evident that a visit of six months will provide a tremendous boost for his work and he will have the opportunity to be exposed in a highly competitive and demanding academic environment. After the completion of his PhD, Ilias is interested in pursuing a lifelong career in academia.
