Eleftherios Sdoukopoulos is a Dipl. Rural and Surveying Engineer, graduate of the Faculty of Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh). He holds an MSc on Transport Engineering, also from AUTh, for which he was awarded a Certificate of Excellence for ranking 1st in his class. Since September 2010, he has been working as an Associate Researcher at the Hellenic Institute of Transport of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, conducting basic and applied research in the fields of maritime transport, port operations and management, port-city interactions and multi-modal port-hinterland transport systems. For further progressing his scientific work, in 2014, he applied and got accepted at the PhD programme of the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus, with his doctoral dissertation focusing on the investigation of port-hinterland relationships and interactions within global supply chains. As a Fulbright Doctoral Dissertation Research Student, he will be visiting the University of Memphis – Department of Civil Engineering, where he will conduct a short-term research on the assessment of port-hinterland network and corridor efficiency and productivity in the U.S., analyzing rail-based port-hinterland transport chains with the aim to develop a diverse yet internationally consistent set of relevant performance metrics, complementing the approach already followed for the analysis of the European context. Upon completion of his US-based doctoral research, that will greatly contribute towards the finalization of his PhD studies, his future plans are to further advance his career on maritime transport research, by applying for a Senior Researcher position at the Hellenic Institute of Transport, exploiting and widening his expertise, knowledge and international collaborations within the framework of a new Centre of Excellence on Maritime Transport and Ports that the Institute is currently building.
