Pediatric Pulmonology

Eleana Kouroukli studied Medicine at the University of Ioannina. She is currently a PhD candidate in Pediatric Pulmonology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Her research focuses on Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD), a condition that compromises the respiratory system of preterm neonates, and its long-term effects on lung function and exercise capacity in childhood and adolescence. Eleana is also involved in the clinical and research activities of the Pediatric Pulmonology and Cystic Fibrosis Unit of the 3rd Department of Pediatrics of the Aristotle University.

Eleana will be visiting the Children’s National Medical Center at George Washington University to participate as a research trainee in the Severe BPD Program of the Division of Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine. During her visit, she aspires to study in depth the methods of clinical evaluation of infants with BPD, and get acquainted with the development of clinical protocols for their follow-up. Eleana hopes that her research work will ultimately contribute to a deeper understanding of the course and consequences of the disease in later life, and help improve the respiratory health of patients surviving preterm birth and BPD. The combination of these educational and research activities are part of Eleana’s training plan to specialize in Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care, while she continues to be an avid piano player.
