My scientific interests lie in study of the structural, electrical and magnetic properties of materials for permanent magnet and solid state battery applications. During the last ten years, I have been involved in studying the use of magnetic particle hyperthermia in cancer treatment. Besides academic and intellectual fulfillment, working in academia gives me the unique opportunity to travel the world, interact with interesting researchers, and teach students. Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, getting to know different cultures, politics, reading books, swimming and playing percussion.
Fulbright Foundation gave me the opportunity to spend a sabbatical at the Center for Systems Biology of the Massachusetts General Hospital, an affiliate of the world-leading Harvard Medical School. I am looking forward to exchange experience and expertise with HMS researchers and students around the use of magnetic nanoparticles and μNMR in tissue-based clinical diagnostics, magnetic particle hyperthermia, and magneto-mechanical affection of cancer cells. During my stay in the U.S., I am planning to visit and interact with colleagues and students from other Boston and U.S.-based academic institutes such as MIT, Northeastern University, Villanova University, Delaware University and University of California at Riverside.
One of my main goals for the future is the transfer of ‘know-how’ and the establishment of academic links between young Greek researchers and Harvard Medical School and other U.S. universities. Since our research on the biomedical applications of MNPs is conducted in close collaboration with AHEPA Hospital (one of the largest Greek hospitals) and the Department of Molecular Biology & Genetics in Alexandroupolis, my experiences and interactions with U.S. scientists will rapidly diffuse across a wider academic and clinical community back in Greece.
