60th ANNIVERSARY of the PHILIPPI FESTIVAL
The Ancient Theatre of Philippi in the city of Kavala hosts a series of five new productions on August 9 and 10 to celebrate is 60th anniversary. The year 2017 is dedicated to stage director Theodoros Terzopoulos and a younger generation of stage directors, both Greek and international, was invited to create new productions inspired by ancient drama.
With the support of the Philippi Festival and local sponsors, theater groups started rehearsals in Krinides from July 20 onward forming an international theater camp with an artistic and educational dimension. Rehearsals are open to the public, transforming the camp into a workshop where students and members of the local community can interact with the five stage directors and follow their working methods.
The five participants include:
Ioli Andreadi working on the play 'Ion' by Euripides
Sylvia Liouliou in collaboration with Nikos Flessas exploring the narratives of tragedy
Georgia Mavragani working on 'Iphigenia at Aulis' by Euripides
Laura Tesman from Brooklyn College, New York, exploring the character of Io through her descendants (Prometheus Bound and Danaides)
The Drama School of the National Theatre of Northern Greece working on Oedipus Rex by Sophocles
